A state in southern Brazil, located at the southernmost tip of the country, bordering Argentina and Uruguay. Its capital is Porto Alegre. Its area is 282,184 km2, which is 3.32% of the national land area, and its population is 9,578,600 (1995), with a population density of 34 people/km2. The state is divided into three parts: the mountainous region in the northeast and the coastal range and coastal plain in the southeast. The Rio Grande Plateau in the northeast exceeds 1,000 m in some places. The Rio Grande Shield in the southeast belongs to the coastal range and is in the 500 m range.
