Also known as the Emperor Seamount System. A chain of seamounts that runs north and south in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. It runs south from near the western end of the Aleutian Islands along the 170° east longitude to 30° north latitude. It is about 2500 km long. It is a chain of more than a dozen guyots (flat-topped seamounts) named after ancient emperors, such as Jimmu, Nintoku, Suiko, Tenchi, and Kanmu. The surrounding seafloor is about 6000 m deep, but the summits of the seamounts are 1300 to 2300 m deep. It was named the Northwest Pacific Submarine Mountain Range by Tosaburo Tayama in 1952, but was later named the Emperor Seamount Chain by American R. Dietz.
