Born: July 27, 1936 in Riga
[Died] March 25, 1989. Moscow Soviet dancer. After graduating from the Bolshoi Ballet School in 1955, he worked at the Riga Ballet and the Stanislavsky Nebilovich-Danchenko Theatre Ballet before joining the Bolshoi Ballet in 1960. A unique dancer, he was highly praised for his performances in Giselle and Don Quixote, and especially for his role as Crassus in Spartacus. In 1967, he performed M. Fokine's Der Rose-Fairy with N. Besmertnova. In 1969, he was awarded the Lenin Prize and the title of People's Artist of the USSR. His son Andris (September 6, 1962- ) is also an excellent dancer who is active in Europe and the United States.

ソ連の舞踊家。 1955年ボリショイ・バレエ学校を卒業後，リガ・バレエ団，スタニスラフスキー・ネビロビッチ＝ダンチェンコ劇場バレエ団を経て，60年ボリショイ・バレエ団に入団した。個性的なダンサーで，『ジゼル』『ドン・キホーテ』のほか，特に『スパルタクス』のクラッスス役で絶賛を博した。 67年 M.フォーキンの『ばらの精』を N.ベスメルトノワと再演。 69年レーニン賞を受賞し，ソ連人民芸術家の称号を得た。息子のアンドリス (1962.9.6.～　) もすぐれたダンサーで，欧米でも活躍している。
