Japanese: ウンラン(海蘭) - ウンラン（英語表記）Linaria japonica Miq.

A perennial plant of the Scrophulariaceae family that grows on sandy coastal soil (illustration). It is said to have been named Kairan because its flowers resemble orchids. The stems rise obliquely to a height of 20-30 cm. The leaves are slightly fleshy, greenish-white, elliptical, and arranged in opposite or whorls, with the upper leaves arranged alternately. In summer, a short raceme is produced at the end of the stem, and several flowers are produced. The flowers are yellowish-white and have a mask-like corolla with a yellow-orange throat that is raised. The tube is 1.5-2 cm long and has a spur that extends 0.5-1 cm backward at the base of the corolla tube. The fruit is spherical, about 8 mm in diameter, and contains many black seeds, which are scattered by irregular cracks at the top.
