Oyabitcha - Sergeant Major

A marine fish belonging to the order Perciformes and family Pomacentridae. It is widely distributed along the coasts of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Its body is egg-shaped and adults can reach 20 centimeters in length. It has five clear black horizontal bands on a yellow or gray-blue background. Juveniles often appear in tide pools in temperate zones in summer, but adults live in rocky areas south of Okinawa, where they lay eggs attached to rock cavities more than 10 meters deep, which their parents protect until they hatch. The etymology is unclear, but it is thought to be a corruption of the Okinawan name "ayabitchi" (meaning "running weave"). It is easy to raise and is used as an ornamental fish.

硬骨魚綱スズキ目スズメダイ科に属する海水魚。インド洋、太平洋の沿岸に広く分布する。体は卵形で成魚は20センチメートルに達する。黄色あるいは灰青色の地に明瞭(めいりょう)な5本の黒色横帯がある。幼魚は夏季に温帯域の潮だまりに多く出現するが、成魚は沖縄以南の岩礁域にすみ、10メートル以深の岩のくぼみに付着卵を産み、孵化(ふか)するまで親が保護する。語源は明らかではないが、沖縄での呼称「あやびっち」（綾(あや)が走るの意）が転訛(てんか)したものと考えられる。飼育しやすく、観賞用とされる。
