A city in the northwest of Lancashire County, northwest of England, England. It is part of the Lancaster region, including the surrounding area. It is located about 80 km north-northwest of Manchester, about 10 km upstream from the mouth of the Lune River, which flows into the Irish Sea. The town was founded on the site of a Roman military garrison, and developed as a market town after receiving a royal charter in 1193. It prospered as a port town at the end of the 18th century, but its port functions soon declined due to silt deposits. It is one of the major livestock trading centers in the northwest of England, and has industries such as furniture, linoleum, and synthetic fibers. In addition to the remains of Roman defensive walls, old buildings such as a medieval castle, St. Mary's Cathedral, and St. Peter's Cathedral from the 19th century are preserved. Lancaster University (1964) is located here. Area of the district: 577 ^km2 . District population: 136,700 (estimated 2004). Urban population: 45,952 (2001).

[Died] June 6, 1618, London. British navigator. From a young age, he engaged in trade with Portugal, and in 1588, he participated in the battle against the Spanish Armada under F. Drake. In 1591, he bypassed the southern tip of Africa and sailed to India and then to Penang Island, opening the way for British trade with the East Indies. In 1600, when the British East India Company was established, he led its fleet to Southeast Asia the following year, negotiating trade on the islands of Sumatra and Java. He returned to the UK in 1603 and was knighted. He was also interested in discovering the Northwest Passage, and supported W. Baffin's exploration.

A city in the southeastern part of Pennsylvania, USA. Settlement began in 1729, and in 1777 the Continental Congress held a one-day session here while evacuating from Philadelphia. It was incorporated as a city in 1818. It is famous for producing horse-drawn carriages and Lancaster rifles, which played important roles in the history of American settlement, and the iron casting industry is still thriving today. It is also the center of the Pennsylvania Dutch, descendants of German immigrants. It is a distribution center for livestock, dairy products, poultry, wheat, tobacco, corn, etc., and the clock, linoleum, and electrical appliance industries have also developed. There are many cultural facilities, such as universities, libraries, parks, museums, planetariums, and agricultural museums. Population 55,551 (1990).

A city in southwestern California, USA. It is located in Antelope Valley on the western edge of the Mojave Desert. It was first settled in 1882 by Scottish settlers led by M. L. Wicks. The valley was used for cattle grazing until the early 1900s, when gasoline engines began to be used for pumped irrigation, and it became an agricultural region. Today, the city is home to industries such as aircraft and electronics. Edwards Air Force Base is located in the northeastern suburbs. Population: 156,633 (2010).

[Died] October 24, 1838, New York. British educator. One of the founders of the tutoring method, a group education method in which children teach each other. This method, which was first developed out of the need for a cost-effective education for the children of the poor, was widely adopted in Europe and the United States. In 1808, the Lancaster Society was founded to support his teaching method, but later, due to disagreements with the organizers, he traveled to America and worked to implement and spread his teaching method.

[Died] October 20, 1994, Los Angeles. American filmmaker and actor. His debut film was The Killers (1946). In 1954, he founded Hecht-Lancaster Productions, and as a producer he produced Elmer Gantry (60, Academy Award for Best Actor) and other conscientious works.

A city in southern Ohio, USA. It faces the Hocking River, about 50 km southeast of Columbus. It was settled by German immigrants from Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1798. It was incorporated as a city in 1831. Its main industries are glass, shoes, and machinery manufacturing. It is a distribution center for dairy products, pigs, and beef cattle. Population: 34,507 (1990).

イギリスの教育者。子供同士が教え合う集団教育法である助教法の創始者の一人。初め貧民の子の教育のため，費用をかけない教育の必要性から生れたこの方法は，広く欧米諸国に採用された。 1808年彼の教授法を援助する目的でランカスター協会が創設されたが，のち組織委員と意見が合わずアメリカに渡り，その教育法の実施と普及に努めた。
