A city in the northwest of Lancashire County, northwest of England, England. It is part of the Lancaster region, including the surrounding area. It is located about 80 km north-northwest of Manchester, about 10 km upstream from the mouth of the Lune River, which flows into the Irish Sea. The town was founded on the site of a Roman military garrison, and developed as a market town after receiving a royal charter in 1193. It prospered as a port town at the end of the 18th century, but its port functions soon declined due to silt deposits. It is one of the major livestock trading centers in the northwest of England, and has industries such as furniture, linoleum, and synthetic fibers. In addition to the remains of Roman defensive walls, old buildings such as a medieval castle, St. Mary's Cathedral, and St. Peter's Cathedral from the 19th century are preserved.
