This castle was originally the residence of the Kiyono clan of Matsushiro, Hanishina County, Shinano Province (Matsushiro, Nagano City), but in 1553, Takeda Shingen ordered Yamamoto Kansuke to reconstruct it. In 1556, Takasaka Masanobu became the castle lord, and it became the Takeda's base for the Battle of Kawanakajima. In 1572, Uesugi Kagekatsu took control, and in 1603, Matsudaira Tadateru took control, and the castle was renamed Taijo Castle, with his vassal Hanai Yoshikatsu as the castle lord. In 1603, Sanada Nobuyuki took over the castle, and it was renamed Matsushiro Castle. 信濃国埴科郡松代 (長野市松代) の清野氏の居館であったものを,天文 22 (1553) 年,武田信玄が山本勘助に命じて修築した平城。弘治2 (56) 年高坂昌信が城代となり,川中島の戦いの武田方拠点となった。天正 10 (82) 年上杉景勝が支配し,のち慶長8 (1603) 年松平忠輝が支配,家臣花井義雄を城代として待城城と改称し,さらに元和8 (22) 年真田信之入封後松代城と改めた。
