…In principle, the vertebrae are made up of a roughly cylindrical vertebral body (not found in cyclostomes) that is connected to the front and back by joints, and a Λ-shaped part (called the neural arch) that surrounds the vertebral foramen through which the spinal cord passes. Sturdy transverse processes protrude from both sides of the neural arch, forming joints with the ribs. There is also a median process called the neural spine (spinous process) on the back, which serves as the attachment point for segmental muscles.
