The former Chinese name for Islam. Islam is said to have been introduced to China during the Tang Dynasty, but disappeared for a time after the Huang Chao Rebellion. In the Song Dynasty, Saracen trade ships again began to visit southern China, and Islam was revived. During the Mongol Yuan Dynasty, Muslims from the Western Regions began to flow into China in large numbers, and many of them held important positions in the Yuan Dynasty. In particular, Muslims from the Western Regions were found in large numbers in Yunnan, Guangdong, Hangzhou, Shandong, and Beijing. In China, Muslims were called Hui Hui or Huikyojin. The word Hui in Hui is said to have originated from the Uighurs, that is, Hui He or Hui Kun. Today, Islam is called Qingzhen Jiao, and mosques are called Qingzhen Si or Chai Ji. Muslims form a community where Muslims live together in groups, both in cities and rural areas. The Muslim population in China is estimated to be 5 to 10 million, but the actual number is unknown. The most numerous are Yunnan, Shandong, Guangdong and Hebei. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
