1885‐1946 A count and leader of right-wing groups in France. In 1928 he retired as a lieutenant colonel, and in the following year he joined the Croix de Fou, a small group of former soldiers who had served in the front lines. Under his leadership, the Croix de Fou transformed into a mass political group that advocated a national revolution, and was seen by the left as the most dangerous fascist group. After the armistice of 1940, he supported Marshal Pétain, but he drew a line around himself as an extreme collaborator with Germany, and in 1943 he was arrested by German military authorities.
