An old town in Hikawa District, Shimane Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan. The San'in Main Line runs along the coast. Most of the area is forest, with little arable land. Figs are a specialty, and they are also processed into jam and other products. Fixed-net fishing is practiced, and nori, wakame seaweed, and sea urchins are also produced. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Izumo City along with Hirata City, Sada Town, Koryo Town, and Taisha Town in Hikawa District. 55.04 km2 . 4,191 people (2003).
