Rendaku

When words are combined, the initial clear consonant of the following word becomes a voiced consonant. There are three types: Japanese and Japanese (ao + sora > aozora), Chinese and Chinese (shou + shin > shoujin), and Chinese and Japanese (en + suru > enzuru). The conditions under which rendaku occurs in Japanese words are complex, but conversely, conditions under which it does not occur include low maturity (when unification has not been completed), when predicates are combined, and when the end of the previous word or the second syllable of the following word is a voiced consonant. In Chinese words, this has been called "shin-daku" since the end of the Heian period, and occurred quite regularly as a nasal assimilation phenomenon when the end of the previous word contains the glottal stop consonant -m, -n, or -ŋ, but today it has already become lexically fixed, like rendaku.

単語が結合した場合に、後項の語頭の清音が濁音化する事象。和語と和語（アオ＋ソラ＞アオゾラ）、漢語と漢語（精(ショウ)＋進(シン)＞ショウジン）、漢語と和語（演(エン)＋スル＞エンズル）の3種がある。和語の場合の連濁がどのような条件下でおこるかは複雑であるが、逆におこらない条件としては、熟合度の低い場合（一語化を完了していない場合）、用言と用言が結合している場合、前項末尾または後項第二音節目が濁音である場合、などが指摘できる。漢語の場合には、平安末期から「新濁(しんだく)」とよばれて、前項末尾が撥音(はつおん)-m,-n,-ŋを有する字の場合の鼻音同化現象としてかなり規則的に発生していたが、今日では連声(れんじょう)と同じく、すでに語彙(ごい)的に固定している。
