Jorge Lavelli

A director born in Argentina. Along with fellow Argentineans V. Garcia and Sabari, he is a representative of the so-called Neo-Baroque, and is mainly active in France. He majored in economics at the University of Buenos Aires, but became fascinated with amateur theater, and in 1960 he received a scholarship to study at the Théâtre des Nations in Paris. In 1963 he won the Youth Theater Competition with Gombrowici's "The Marriage". In 1967 he established his position as a young director by directing Arrabal's "The Architect and the Assyrian Emperor" at the Théâtre de Montparnasse Gaston Baty and Seneca's "Medea" at the Odeon.

アルゼンチン生れの演出家。同国生れのV.ガルシアやサバリらとともにいわゆるネオ･バロックを代表し，おもにフランスで活躍している。ブエノス･アイレスの大学では経済学を専攻したが，アマチュア演劇に夢中になり，60年奨学金でパリのテアトル･デ･ナシヨン付属大学に留学。63年ゴンブロービチ作《結婚》で若者劇団コンクールに優勝。67年モンパルナス･ガストン･バティ座のアラバル作《建築家とアッシリア皇帝》とオデオン座のセネカ作《メデア》の演出で若手演出家としての地位を確立。
