Suzuki Senzaburou

A playwright from the Taisho period. Born in Aoyama, Tokyo. Graduated from Okura Commercial High School. Apprenticed under the writer Mizuno Hashu. In 1913, he was selected to win a script contest held by Mitsukoshi Gofukuten. In 1916, he was recommended by Okamura Kakiko to work on editing Shin Engei (Genbunsha), and while doing so he devoted himself to writing plays, publishing works such as "The Daughter of Yahataya," "The Father of Rashamen," and "The Death of a Beautiful Idiot." In February 1927, his play "Jirokichi's Confession" was performed by Onoe Kikugoro VI and was well received. Following the dissolution of Genbunsha in the wake of the Great Kanto Earthquake (1923), he began writing. Many of his works depict the essence of humanity in an eerie atmosphere of emptiness. "Koheiji Alive," published in Engeki Shincho in August 1928, was his last work and is his representative work. 大正期の劇作家。東京青山生まれ。大倉商業卒。作家水野葉舟に入門。大正2(1913)年三越呉服店の懸賞脚本に入選,大正5(1916)年岡村柿紅のすすめで『新演芸』(玄文社)の編集に従事,かたわら劇作に精進,「八幡屋の娘」「ラシャメンの父」「美しき白痴の死」などを発表。12年2月「次郎吉懺悔」が6代目尾上菊五郎により上演され好評を博した。関東大震災(1923)による玄文社の解散にともない,以後文筆生活に入る。作品は虚無的な無気味な雰囲気のなかに人間の真髄を描き出したものが多い。13年8月『演劇新潮』に発表した「生きてゐる小平次」はその絶筆で代表作。近代戯曲史上の名作として評価が高い。<参考文献>『鈴木泉三郎戯曲集』1巻,大山功『近代日本戯曲史』2巻
