Longnon, AH (English spelling) LongnonAH

…Even in recent times, due to political upheaval such as the Cultural Revolution, place names within cities and administrative districts are likely to change, but in rural areas, they hardly change at all. [Umehara Iku]
[Western]
Scientific research into place names in Europe became popular at the end of the 19th century, with the founding of the Place Name Society in the UK (1923) and the publication of its county place name dictionary, as well as the compilation of dictionaries of the etymology of place names in various countries by Eilert Ekwall (1877-1964) in the UK, Ernst Wilhelm Förstemann (1822-1906) in Germany, and Auguste Honoré Longnon (1844-1911) in France. The basic method of these studies was to trace the place names back as far as possible to their first recorded appearance, and to match the naming principles of place names with nature, history, tradition, etc., and there were active attempts to combine etymological research using linguistic methods with related sciences such as history, geography, and ethnology.
