Juro Miyoshi

Japanese: 三好十郎 - みよしじゅうろう
Juro Miyoshi

Playwright. Born in Saga City on April 21, 1902. Registered as the son of his father's older brother, with the surname Mori. Entered the Miyoshi family at a young age. Separated from his biological parents, he grew up in a complicated environment, being raised by his maternal grandmother. Graduated from the English department of Waseda University in 1925 (Taisho 14). Published poetry while still a student. Moving from syndicalism to Marxism, he formed the Left Arts Alliance with Tsuboi Shigeji and others in 1928 (Showa 3). His first play, "Who's Going to Cut His Head?", was published in the inaugural issue of the alliance's journal. In April of the same year, he joined NAPF (All-Japan Proletarian Arts League) and belonged to its subordinate organization, Plot (Japan Proletarian Theatre Alliance), where his plays "Oaki Covered in Scars" (1928) and "Coal Dust" (1930) were performed. However, he had doubts about Marxist thought and movements, and left Plot. After that, he published works such as "Senta the Slashed" (1934), "Hikoroku Laughs Greatly" (1936), "Buoy" (1940), and "Lion" (1943), which decorated the 1930s. For a time he belonged to the PCL Literature Club and also wrote screenplays. After World War II, he published many works such as "Ruins" (1947) and "I Don't Know That Person" (1948), and won the Yomiuri Literature Prize for "The Man of Flames" (1951), which portrayed the painter Van Gogh. His collection of critical essays "Season of Fear" (1950), which harshly criticized progressive intellectuals, also attracted attention. He died on February 16, 1958. After his death, through the efforts of Masato Otake, the mimeographed "Complete Works of Miyoshi Juro" was published in 63 volumes (1960-66).
