The capital of County Galway in the west of the Republic of Ireland. Population 65,774 (2002 census preliminary figure). A port city located on the northern shore at the back of Galway Bay, it is also a market town in a rural area. Industries include woolen textiles, chemical fertilizers, printing, hat making, and furniture. Tourist souvenirs made from processed black marble from the Connemara region in the northwest are famous. It has flourished as a commercial center since the 13th century, and trade with Spain was important. It is the location of a university and a bishopric.
