Galway - Galway (English spelling)

The capital of County Galway in the west of the Republic of Ireland. Population 65,774 (2002 census preliminary figure). A port city located on the northern shore at the back of Galway Bay, it is also a market town in a rural area. Industries include woolen textiles, chemical fertilizers, printing, hat making, and furniture. Tourist souvenirs made from processed black marble from the Connemara region in the northwest are famous. It has flourished as a commercial center since the 13th century, and trade with Spain was important. It is the location of a university and a bishopric. Nearby Salthill was developed as a seaside resort. Regular ferries run to the Aran Islands.

アイルランド共和国西部、ゴールウェー県の県都。人口6万5774（2002国勢調査速報値）。ゴールウェー湾奥北岸に位置する港町で、農村地帯の市場町でもある。毛織物、化学肥料、印刷、製帽、家具工業などが立地する。北西部コネマラ地方の黒大理石を加工した観光客向けの土産(みやげ)品は有名。13世紀以来商業中心地として栄え、スペインとの交易は重要であった。大学、司教区の所在地。近郊のサルトヒルは海浜保養地として開発された。アラン諸島へ定期船が就航する。
