The art of the Americas south of Mexico. Originally, the term Latin America refers to the region that was discovered and conquered by European countries such as Spain and Portugal, but the culture left by the indigenous peoples merged with that of Europe and has developed independently since the modern era.
[Prehistoric Art]
The Olmec culture in Mesoamerica developed a unique style of art in stone carving, pottery, jade and serpentine sculpture. The Olmec style influenced local cultures in various regions, but it was especially strong in the south, where it led to Classic Maya art through the Izapa style.

メキシコ以南のアメリカ大陸に行われた美術。本来スペイン，ポルトガルなどヨーロッパ諸国による発見･征服後をラテン･アメリカというべきであるが，原住民が残した文化はヨーロッパのそれと融合し，近代以降に独自の展開を示す。

　メソアメリカとアンデスでは，前1000年以降，美術の発展が著しい。メソアメリカでのオルメカ文化は大石彫，土器，ヒスイ(翡翠)や蛇紋岩の彫刻に独特の表現様式を作りあげた。オルメカ様式の影響により各地の地方的文化が開花するが，とくにオルメカ様式の影響は南部で強く，イサパ様式を経て古典期マヤ美術が導き出された。
