The art of the Americas south of Mexico. Originally, the term Latin America refers to the region that was discovered and conquered by European countries such as Spain and Portugal, but the culture left by the indigenous peoples merged with that of Europe and has developed independently since the modern era. [Prehistoric Art] The Olmec culture in Mesoamerica developed a unique style of art in stone carving, pottery, jade and serpentine sculpture. The Olmec style influenced local cultures in various regions, but it was especially strong in the south, where it led to Classic Maya art through the Izapa style.
