Kashima Ippu

A metalworker from the late Edo and Meiji periods. Son of Ippusai Hidehiro. Born in Edo. His childhood name was Zenjiro, and his pen name was Ippusai Rakusoku. He first learned the technique of iron nunome zōgan (weave of inlaid silk) used in the production of tsuba (guard swords) from his father. He later applied nunome zōgan to oborogin (silver-tinted silverware), opening up a unique realm of his own, making use of pictorial patterns, intricate geometric patterns, and arabesque designs. As the sword ban caused a decline in sword fitting metalwork, he applied nunome zōgan (weave of inlaid silk), which was one of the techniques, to the production of large-scale works, and developed it further, finding a new way forward, which was a great achievement. His representative works include the "Gold Inlaid Octagonal Vase" (owned by the Imperial Household Agency) and the "Oborogin Landscape Picture Frame" (owned by the Tokyo National Museum).

幕末明治期の金工家。一布斎秀広の子。江戸生まれ。幼名は善次郎,号に一布斎楽則がある。はじめ父のもとで鐔の制作に用いる鉄布目象嵌の技術を学ぶ。のちに布目象嵌を朧銀にも応用して絵画文様,緻密な幾何学文や唐草文を駆使した独自の境地をひらいた。廃刀令による刀装金工の衰退のなかで,その一技法であった布目象嵌を大作制作に応用し,これを発展させて活路を見いだした功績は大きい。代表作に「金象嵌八角壺」(宮内庁蔵)や「朧銀山水図額」(東京国立博物館蔵)などがある。
