Earl of Danby

English aristocrat and politician. He became a member of the House of Commons in 1665, and was appointed Lord Treasurer by Charles II in 1673, and was given the title of Earl. He was impeached by Parliament in 1679 for supporting Charles' pro-French policies and participating in the Treaty of Dover, which sought financial assistance from Louis XIV of France, and was imprisoned in the Tower of London. After his release, he became a critic of the King and cooperated with the Glorious Revolution, and was made Lord Treasurer again under William III, and was given the title of Duke of Leeds. However, he was charged with bribery and fell from grace in 1695.

英国の貴族，政治家。1665年下院議員となり，チャールズ２世に登用されて1673年大蔵卿となり，伯爵を授かった。チャールズの親フランス政策を支持して，フランスのルイ14世からの資金援助を仰ぐドーバー条約に荷担したかどで1679年議会の弾劾を受け，ロンドン塔に投獄された。釈放後は国王批判派に転じて名誉革命に協力して，ウィリアム３世のもとでふたたび大蔵卿となり，公爵（1st Duke of Leeds）を授爵。しかし1695年収賄の罪に問われ失脚。
