English aristocrat and politician. He became a member of the House of Commons in 1665, and was appointed Lord Treasurer by Charles II in 1673, and was given the title of Earl. He was impeached by Parliament in 1679 for supporting Charles' pro-French policies and participating in the Treaty of Dover, which sought financial assistance from Louis XIV of France, and was imprisoned in the Tower of London. After his release, he became a critic of the King and cooperated with the Glorious Revolution, and was made Lord Treasurer again under William III, and was given the title of Duke of Leeds. However, he was charged with bribery and fell from grace in 1695. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
