Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A privileged townsman from Osaka during the Edo period. Terashima Touemon, Amagasakiya Mataemon, and Yamamura Yosuke, who had close ties to the Tokugawa family, are known to the world as the "Three Townsmen." The Terashima family originated from Terashima, Konagawa, Kii Province (Wakayama Prefecture), and the Terashima surname is derived from this. The first Saburozaemon was a tile maker by trade, and was contracted by the Toyotomi family to make tiles, and was also commissioned by the Tokugawa family to make tiles. The second Sozaemon was bestowed a residence in Minami Kawarayacho, Osaka in 1615 (Genna 1). After the third Gorobei, the fourth Touemon was given a tile quarry on the land adjacent to the residence's site northeast in 1630 (Kan'ei 7). This is called the Kawaraya Touemon land acquisition. From then until the Meiji Restoration, the Terashima family continued to hold the privilege of monopolizing roof tile sales, and supplied tiles to the Imperial Palace, Osaka Castle, Nijo Castle, and many other shrines and temples.
