Rakkyo (spicy) - Rakkyo (English name) Allium chinense G.Don (=A.bakeri Regel)
A perennial plant of the lily family native to China (illustration). The bulb is long and ovate, with a white or pale purple outer skin. It tillers vigorously, producing small bulbs at its base. The leaves are thin and semi-cylindrical with hollow pentagons. The plant is about 30 cm tall, and the entire plant has a distinctive odor. It does not wither in winter, but the leaves wither in summer and it goes dormant. Rakkyo is a vegetable in China and Japan, and is also used in Southeast Asia, but production is low. The English name, rakkyo, is the same as the Japanese name. It is said that wild species exist in China, the Indochina Peninsula, India, and the Himalayas.
