Yakumo Misho

Japanese:
Yakumo Misho

A book on waka poetry from the early Kamakura period. Written by Emperor Juntoku. Written before 1221 (Jokyu 3), it was revised and compiled in exile in Sado after the Jokyu War (1221). Six volumes. There are a rough draft version and a re-edited version, and the contents differ slightly. Volume 1 is the section on justice (explanations of the six principles, poetry style, poetry illnesses, etc.), volume 2 is the section on etiquette (collecting knowledge and records on the etiquette of poetry contests, poetry gatherings, and anthologies), volume 3 is the section on details (listing words and explaining 17 categories such as celestial phenomena and earthly phenomena), volume 4 is the section on language (explaining many words under three categories: secular language = ordinary words, historical language = historical words, and simplified language = difficult words), volume 5 is the section on famous places (listing the locations and sources of famous places), and volume 6 is the preparatory section (explanation of the author's theory on poetry). It is a masterpiece that is both a culmination of ancient poetry studies and the foundation of medieval poetry theory, and contains many quotations from books that have since been lost, making it an immensely valuable resource.
