1878‐1972 Indian politician. Born in Salem district, Madras state (now Tamil Nadu) in southern India. Commonly known as Rājājī. He practiced law from 1900, but also showed a strong interest in the nationalist movement, and during the Satyagraha (non-violent resistance) struggle of 1919 he abandoned his legal career to follow Mahatma Gandhi, becoming influenced by his ideas. When the Congress government was established in Madras state in 1937 following the introduction of state autonomy, he became its prime minister and promoted national education and prohibition of alcohol.
