American painter, born in Philadelphia. After studying at the Pennsylvania School of Fine Arts, he traveled to France and studied under Jerome. After returning to the United States, he became a professor at his alma mater, and painted portraits and family life with a thorough realism based on anatomy. 米国の画家，フィラデルフィア生れ。ペンシルベニア美術学校で学んだのち渡仏，ジェロームらに師事。帰国後母校の教授となり，解剖学に基礎をおいた徹底した写実主義で，肖像，家庭生活等を描いた。代表作に外科手術の様子を描いた《グロス博士の臨床講義》（1875年）などがある。
