It means "king" in Indian languages including Sanskrit. In early Vedic texts, the word form "rajan" was used to mean the "chief" of a tribe, but as royal power expanded, it came to mean the "king" of various countries. Later, titles such as "King of kings (rajadhiraja)", "Great King (maharaja)", and "King of great kings (maharajadhiraja)" also came to be used. Of these, the title "maharaja" was also used by feudal lords during the British colonial period.
