Also known as Rosetta. A city in the Buhaira Governorate in northern Egypt. It is located 13 km upstream from the mouth of the Rashid River in the Nile Delta, 56 km northeast of Alexandria. Founded by Caliph Harun al-Rashid around 800, it flourished by monopolizing grain exports from the delta until the 17th and 18th centuries, but declined with the rise of Alexandria. The Rosetta Stone, discovered in August 1799 near Fort St. Julian, just north of the city, is famous. Rice milling and fishing are thriving, and the city also serves as a commercial port. Population 50,000 2014 (1986 estimate).RasheedPlease see the "Harun al-Rashid" page.
