A passerine bird of the Wagtail family (illustration). Total length is about 15 cm. A species of pipit, it has an olive-brown back, whitish undersides and eyebrows, and black vertical stripes on its back and chest. It breeds in temperate and subarctic regions of the Asian continent, and migrates to warmer regions in winter. In Japan, it breeds in the mountainous and alpine regions of Hokkaido, Honshu, and Shikoku. During the breeding season, males perch on treetops and sing complex songs in a pitch similar to that of skylarks, sometimes flying into the air and singing as they descend to other trees. Because they often perch on treetops, they are also known as the yellow skylark. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
