The name of a character who appears in the New Testament's Gospel of Luke (16:19-31) and the Gospel of John (11:1-46). The former, Lazarus, is a character in Jesus' parable, a poor man covered in sores. In the parable, Lazarus is contrasted with a rich man in relation to the coming salvation of the world. The latter, Lazarus, is the brother of the sisters Martha and Mary of Bethany, who died of an illness and was resurrected by Jesus.
