Alamut (English spelling)

...The Ziyar dynasty (c. 927-1090), which ruled Tabarestan and Gorgan, the Buyid dynasty that became the leader of the eastern Islamic world, and the Kākwayh dynasty (1008-51) in central Iran were all dynasties founded by the Dayramites themselves. At the end of the 11th century, Alamūt, the center of the Dayram region, fell to the Nizari Hasan al-Sabbah and remained impregnable until it was destroyed by Hulagu's Mongol army. Many Dayramites became Fida'is, assassins of the Nizari sect.

From Hassan al-Sabbah

...After that, he engaged in missionary activities in various parts of Iran. In 90, he captured the fortress of Alamut in the Elburz Mountains in northern Iran, and soon expanded his influence to Dayram, Kummis, Khuhistan, and Syria. In 94, the issue of the succession to the Fatimid caliphate led to him supporting the deposed Nizār (?-1096) and breaking away from the dynasty, forming the Nizari sect.
