According to legend, Aitor, who was a member of Noah's Ark and washed up on the area, is the ancestor of the Basque people, and the seven names of his seven sons are the names of the seven regions. Historically, the Basque people originated from a people who settled in the foothills of the Pyrenees before the invasion of the Indo-European peoples, and ruins from the late Paleolithic period still remain.
