A city in the Kiev Oblast of Ukraine. Until 1943 it was called Pereyaslav or Pereyaslavl'. Population 30,200 (1991). The name first appeared in the Byzantine-Russian Treaty of 907. In 992 a fortress was built here, and it became an important base for defending the southern border of Kievan Rus'. From the late 11th century it became the capital of the Pereyaslav Principality, but was destroyed by the Mongols in 1239.
