A chain of coral reef islands scattered from north to south in the Arabian Sea, about 320 km off the Malabar coast, southwest of the Deccan Peninsula in India. In a broader sense, the southernmost Minicoy and the northernmost Ameendivi Islands together make up the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. Of the 20 main islands, only 10 are inhabited. The inhabitants are Muslims who migrated from the Malabar coast and Sri Lanka. Copra cultivation and fishing are practiced. The centre is Kavaratti Island. ^{32 km2} . Population 64,473 (2011).
