As their elegant name suggests, this group of hemipteran insects has many species with beautiful, large wings, and are classified into the Ricaniidae, Nogodinidae, and Flatidae families. Many species are found in tropical regions, and more than a dozen species are known from Japan, all of which are found south of Honshu and do not live in Hokkaido. Most species are about 1 cm in size from head to wing tip. They have large forewings with fine wing veins and a variety of colors and patterns, and in some species the entire wings are almost transparent.

優美な名のとおり，この半翅類の一群の昆虫は，美しい大きな翅を有する種が多く，分類学的には，ハゴロモ科Ricaniidae，ハゴロモモドキ科Nogodinidae，アオバハゴロモ科Flatidaeに分けられる。熱帯地方に種類が多く，日本からは十数種が知られ，すべて本州以南に分布し，北海道には生息しない。大きさはほとんどの種が頭部から翅端まで1cm前後である。前翅が大きく，細かな翅脈を有し，種々の色彩や斑紋をあらわすか，ある種では翅全体が透明に近い。
