Architect. Born in Fukuno Town, Toyama Prefecture (now Nanto City). After graduating from the Department of Architecture at Tokyo Imperial University in 1919 (Taisho 8), he joined the Ministry of Communications and was responsible for the design of many post offices, telephone offices and other facilities related to the Ministry. He is best known for the Tokyo Central Post Office (1932) and the Osaka Central Post Office (1939). After retiring from the ministry in 1944 (Showa 19), he became a professor at Nihon University in 1946. In addition to his design work, after traveling abroad from 1956 to 1957, he wrote many books in German and English to introduce Japanese architecture to the world. One of these, Japanische Architectur (1952), won him the Architectural Institute of Japan Award. He made a great contribution to the modernization of Japanese architecture from a functionalist perspective, but he spent his later years recuperating due to poor health.
