1785‐1823 Spanish soldier, liberal and patriot. He studied at the University of Oviedo and joined the Royal Guard in Madrid in 1807. He fought in the Spanish War of Independence, and was captured in 1808 and taken to France. He returned to Spain via England and Germany (1814) and rejoined the army. In January 1820, he led a force that was supposed to be heading to suppress the independence movement in the American colonies near the city of Cabilla, and issued a pronunciamiento under the banner of supporting the Constitution of Cadiz.
