The most powerful German cartel that dominated the Rhine-Westphalian coal industry. Various cartels were formed in the coal industry after 1878 during the so-called "Great Depression," but around 1890, five sales companies were established one after another to organize the Rhine-Westphalian coal industry cartel. Four of these companies, excluding the coke cartel (which later joined), came together under the leadership of E. Kirdorf, a leading figure in the industry, and in 1893, the Rhine-Westphalian Coal Syndicate, the cartel's governing body, was established in the form of a joint-stock company with investments from 98 participating companies.
