Tabune

Japanese:
Tabune

A type of agricultural tool used in rice cultivation. It is used to carry several sacks of harvested rice from wet fields to the ridges, to carry seedlings from the seedbed, or to plow the rice fields. It is also called a naebune (seed boat) or a hodaki-ta boat. All of them are small and made of wood, and are used by pulling them with a rope or pushing them with a handle.

There are two types of ancient rice field boats. One is a small, boat-shaped dugout canoe; a Yayoi period one was discovered at the Yamaki ruins in Shizuoka Prefecture. The second is a large, rectangular tub with rounded corners, with two rod-shaped handles on the front and back; Yayoi period ones have been excavated from the Yamaki ruins and the Magarikane ruins in Shizuoka City, and a similar fragment from the Kofun period has been found at the Nakata ruins in Yao City, Osaka Prefecture. It has a large capacity, making it easy to float and slide on wet rice fields, and it can also be carried by gripping the handles. It has been pointed out that its shape is very similar to the Mifunashiro, which houses the Mihishiro, which enshrines the Yata no Kagami mirror, at the Imperial Grand Shrine of Ise.
