A freshwater fish of the family Gadidae. It can reach a total length of 1.2m. It has a long and slender body. It has two dorsal fins. It has two pairs of baleen, one pair on the nostrils and the other on the lower jaw. It is brownish overall, with a lighter belly. It spawns from December to March. It is widely distributed in Europe, Asia, and North America. It is not found in Japan. It is an important aquatic fish.
