One of the Five Guards. Divided into the Left and Right Ejifu. An imperial guard organization in the Nara period. Each of the Left and Right Ejifu had one commander, one assistant commander, two captains, two second lieutenants, two chief officers, two junior officers, two doctors, 60 envoys, three direct officers, and Eji and Kato (cooks for the Eji), for a total of about 3,000 people. The number of Eji decreased over the course of the Nara period, and in 805 (Enryaku 24), the Left and Right Ejifu Eji each decreased from 600 to 500, and the Emonfu Eji decreased from 400 to 300, and by the Kōnin era (810-824), the total number was around 1,000-1,200. The Ejifu was established after the Taihō Code (701). The conscripted Eji were mainly from the eastern provinces, Izumo, and Kibi, excluding Kinai, Saikaido, and Sankan Provinces. In 811 (Kōnin 2), the name was changed to Saemon-fu, and the name Eji-fu disappeared.
