Rhine [river] - Rhine
The largest river in Central Europe. It is 1,320 km long and has a drainage area of 224,400 km2 . It originates in the Alps in southeastern Switzerland, flows west through Lake Constance, and forms the border between Germany and Switzerland. It turns north near Basel, forms the border between Germany and France, and then flows through western Germany, enters the Netherlands, and then branches into many tributaries before flowing into the North Sea. The main tributaries are the Neckar, Main, Moselle, and Waal. The upper reaches have many rapids and waterfalls, which are used for power generation. It boasts the second largest flow rate after the Danube, and the middle and lower reaches have played an important role as a waterway from southern Germany to the Baltic Sea since ancient times, and are connected to the Danube via the Main River by the Ludwig Canal. Large ships can navigate to Basel, which is the Swiss port leading to the North Sea. The coastal scenery is excellent, and legends such as the Lorelei and old castles on the riverbank attract many tourists.
