Amberjack - Amberjack

A marine fish belonging to the order Perciformes, family Carangidae. It is in the same genus as Yellowtail and Amberjack. It is found in areas south of the Tohoku region, Taiwan, the coast of mainland China, and Hawaii. In areas west of the Kansai region, it is also called Akabana. Its body resembles that of a Yellowtail, but it is tall and significantly laterally compressed. It has two free spines in front of its anal fin. Its body color is purple-blue on the back and light gray on the abdomen. The tip of its snout is pale pink, and there is a dark pattern in the shape of a figure eight from the front to the back of its head. There is a pale yellow longitudinal stripe in the center of its side. The spawning season in the East China Sea is from June to August. The eggs are planktonic and are laid separately. The larvae, which are up to about 1 cm in length, live floating on the surface offshore, but then attach to floating seaweed and their bodies turn yellowish-reddish brown. When the juvenile fish reach a total length of over 2cm, broad reddish-brown horizontal bands appear on their sides from around the middle of the juvenile stage. The juvenile fish travel on warm currents along with floating seaweed, migrating to the coast. When they reach a total length of around 10cm, they leave the floating seaweed and grow along the coast. In the Seto Inland Sea and other areas, juvenile fish attached to floating seaweed are caught and cultivated (in net cages) as seedlings. The meat is delicious, and can be eaten as sashimi or teriyaki. A closely related species is the long-finned amberjack Seriola rivoliana .

硬骨魚綱スズキ目アジ科に属する海水魚。ブリ、ヒラマサと同じくブリ属である。東北地方以南、台湾、中国大陸沿岸、およびハワイにも分布する。関西以西ではアカバナともいう。体はブリに似ているが、体高が高く、著しく側扁(そくへん)している。臀(しり)びれの前方に遊離した2本の棘(とげ)がある。体色は背部が紫青色で、腹部が淡灰色。吻端(ふんたん)は淡桃色を帯び、頭部の前方から後方にかけて八の字形の暗色模様がある。体側の中央に淡黄色の1縦走帯がある。東シナ海では産卵期が6～8月ごろ。卵は浮遊性で、ばらばらに産み出される。全長1センチメートルぐらいまでの仔魚(しぎょ)は沖合いの表層に浮遊して生活しているが、その後は流れ藻につくようになり、体は黄赤褐色を呈する。全長2センチメートルを超える稚魚期のなかばごろから体側に幅の広い赤褐色横帯が現れる。稚魚は流れ藻とともに暖流にのって移動し、沿岸に来遊する。全長十数センチメートルに達すると流れ藻を離れ、以後は沿岸で成長する。瀬戸内海、その他の地域では、流れ藻についている稚魚を採捕し、種苗として養殖（網生け簀(あみいけす)）が行われている。肉は美味で、刺身、照焼きなどにする。近縁種にヒレナガカンパチSeriola rivolianaが知られている。
