Nikko Photos

Japanese:
Nikko Photos

A photographic toy (gangu) that utilizes chemical reactions. It is also called a blueprint. A picture printed on a thin plate (taneita) is placed on top of a less sensitive sunlight-sensitive paper (tanega), placed in a printing frame with a small glass plate, exposed to sunlight for a few minutes, and then finished by immersing in water. As no fixing solution is used, the image disappears after a few days. It became popular among children from the Taisho era as a new toy that incorporated photography technology. The printing frame is about the size of a business card, and the taneita and tanega, which can take about 20 exposures, were sold as small toys. After World War II, they were used in supplements of children's magazines, and taneita featuring cartoons and TV characters are popular. In haiku poetry, "blueprint" is included as a winter seasonal word.
