A dynasty that ruled the two Iberian peninsula countries of Castile and Aragon in the late Middle Ages. In early 1369, Enrique, Count of Trastámara and illegitimate son of Alfonso XI of Castile, assassinated his father's legitimate successor, Pedro I, and ascended to the throne as Enrique II, founding a new dynasty of Trastámara. In 1410, the death of Martin I brought an end to the royal line of Aragon, and in 1412, a council of representatives held in Caspe elected Fernando de Antequera (Ferdinand I), a son of John I of Castile, as the new king.
