A cave on the island of Staffa in the Inner Hebrides, northwest of Strathclyde (formerly Argyllshire), western Scotland, United Kingdom. The entrance is an arch 6-12m high, and the depth is about 69m. It is constantly eroded by seawater, and the interior is a hexagonal column formed by the cooling of Tertiary basalt lava. According to legend, it is an extension of the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. It became famous after explorer J. Banks visited it in 1772, and Mendelssohn also visited it in 1829 and composed his orchestral overture "Fingal's Cave".
