Senkaku - Senkaku

Japanese: 仙覚 - せんがく
Senkaku - Senkaku
Year of death: After Bun'ei 9? (1272)
Year of birth: Kennin 3 (1203)
A monk, Man'yo scholar, and poet of the Kamakura period. His family lineage is unknown, but he was born in Hitachi. He was of the Tendai sect. He aspired to study the Man'yoshu from the age of 13, and in 1246, by order of the Shogun Fujiwara no Yoritsune, he followed in the footsteps of Minamoto no Chikayuki and revised the Man'yoshu using several works, including Chikayuki's, and added the so-called Senkaku Shinten to the mutenka. In 1253, he presented the Shintenka and the Senkaku Ritsushi Soranjo to the retired Emperor Gosaga. He continued to search through various works and continue to revise them, and in addition to the Kangen version, he presented the Bun'ei 2 and Bun'ei 3 versions to Prince Munetaka. In 1269, he completed the 10-volume Annotated Man'yoshu in Musashi Province. Senkaku's revisions and annotations were a groundbreaking achievement in the history of Man'yoshu research, and he was the greatest Man'yo scholar until Keichu appeared in the Edo period. As a poet, he had four poems included in the "Shoku Kokinshu" and later collections, and was active in the Kamakura poetry world, with his poems being included in the "Shin Wakashu" and "Tosen Waka Rokujo."
