Born: October 23, 1844 in Cologne Died December 4, 1900. German painter from Würzburg. Entered the Munich Academy of Fine Arts in 1864, and studied under A. Ramberg from 1866 to 1868. Exhibited at an exhibition in Munich in 1869, where he encountered G. Courbet's work and was influenced by it. He then went to Paris, but returned to Japan due to the Franco-Prussian War. He was active in Munich from 1870 to 1873, but thereafter lived in a rural area in Bavaria, where he lived alongside farmers and painted them in a realistic, naturalistic style. His major works include "Portrait of the Father" (1866, Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne) and "Three Churchwomen" (1878-1882, Hamburg Art Museum). Raipur |
