…The Nihon Shoki, which gives a fairly detailed account of each of the negotiations between Japanese envoys to the Sui and Tang dynasties, was written after the country's name, Japan, had been established in the 8th century, and all of the characters for Wa that may have been in the original documents used in the book were patiently changed to Nihon, as far as the country's name is concerned. If we look for sources other than the Nihon Shoki, we find in a fragment of the Overseas Kokki that a letter given to a Tang envoy who came to Dazaifu in 664 (the 3rd year of Tenchi) read, "Cho, Nihon Chinzei Tsukushi Daishogun." However, since the Overseas Kokki was also written in 733 (the 5th year of Tenpyo), it is possible that Wa was changed to Nihon. …
