A river in the northeastern part of New York State, USA. It originates in the Adirondack Mountains, flows south, and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. New York City is located on the eastern bank of the river's mouth. It was explored by the Englishman H. Hudson in 1609. With the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, it became more important as an inland waterway, and was the basis for the development of New York City. Its total length is 507 km.
