Shèng Mào yè (English spelling)

Japanese: 盛茂燁 - せいもよう（英語表記）Shèng Mào yè

A Chinese painter from the late Ming Dynasty. Dates of birth and death unknown. His pen name was Yoka, and his pen name was Kenan. He was from Changzhou (Wu County, Jiangsu Province). He excelled at landscapes and portraits, but unlike fellow Wu school literati painters from his hometown, such as Wang Wei, he painted largely professional paintings that took inspiration from Tang poetry. His paintings are characterised by unusual compositions, mountains and rocks that emphasise the sense of volume, and sticky trees, and he shares an eccentric character with Wu Bin and Li Shida. His representative work is Plum Blossoms and Willows Waiting for You (Osaka, private collection). [Sobukawa Hiroshi]

中国，明末の画家。生没年不明。字は与華，号は研庵。長洲(江蘇省呉県)の人。山水，人物を得意としたが，同郷の呉派文人画家と異なり，王維など唐詩に題材をとった多分に職業的な画をかいた。構図の奇抜さ，量感を強調した山石，粘着味のある樹木などに特徴があり，呉彬，李士達などと共通するエキセントリックな性格を有している。代表作に《梅柳待臘図》(大阪，個人蔵)がある。【曾布川寛】
